Okay, so your skincare routine for your face is on point. You’re all about retinol, you have a specialised eye cream, and you’re doing all sorts of facial massage.
But what about below your chin?
Your neck is one of the first areas, along with the hands and decolletage, to show signs of ageing, because this is where the skin is thinner.
This can look like deep wrinkles, lines, and sagging.
Neck wrinkles are one of those things you don’t think about until you start to suddenly notice lines when you look in the mirror, at which point they’ll be all you can see.
The good news is that there are ways to prevent and treat these issues.
First, work out what types of lines you’re up against.
‘Horizontal neck lines are typically caused by ageing and a loss of collagen, which causes the skin on the neck to begin to sag and wrinkle from around the age of 30 onwards,’ explains Dr Baldeep Farmah of Dr Aesthetica. ‘Sun damage and smoking can contribute to the development of neck wrinkles as can sudden and significant weight loss.
‘Vertical neck lines can form through maintaining the same head position over a period of time.’
Yes, that includes constantly looking down at your phone or laptop screen. Ever heard of tech neck? That’s very much a thing.
Limiting your phone use and checking your posture (especially when it comes to using screens) will thus help to prevent vertical lines, but there are other things you can do, too.
The first ones are obvious: ditch the cigarettes (smoking has a negative impact on your skin’s firmness) and limit sun exposure.
Make sure to moisturise and apply SPF to your neck, not just your face.
‘Moisturising creams and lotions containing Vitamin C are considered to be the best at keeping neck lines at bay – although they of course can’t halt the natural ageing process,’ says Dr Baldeep. ‘This is because Vitamin C encourages collagen production and, along with an application of SPF, can protect against sun damage.’
The same way facial massage could be helpful for your skin, doing neck exercises might help to keep lines at bay – although there’s no scientific proof of this.
‘Try pushing your forehead against the palm of your hand for ten seconds then clasping your hands behind your head and pushing back for ten seconds,’ Dr Baldeep suggests. ‘Also, try looking up at the ceiling, keep your mouth closed and make a circular chewing motion for 30 seconds.’
Don’t panic if it’s past the point of prevention, though. There are plenty of treatments to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, such as Botox and fillers.
Dr Baldeep prefers to use Profhilo injections, which contain hyaluronic acid to encourage the skin to regenerate.
‘Profhilo is a skin booster that helps to lift and tighten the skin around the neck. It is considered to be the gold standard in treating ageing necks and effects last around six months,’ he explains.
So there you have it: prevention options and treatments if you are bothered by neck lines.
It’s worth noting, though, that ageing is a natural process and it’s totally okay to just accept wrinkles – on the face, neck, or anywhere else – and leave them be.
Plus, there are always chunky chokers and turtlenecks. Just saying.
