Arnold Schwarzenegger is weighing in on Caitlyn Jenner‘s plan to run for the governor of California. A few days after the Keeping Up With the Kardashians alum announced her bid for the position, the actor shared his thoughts on her intent to run.
Caitlyn Jenner filed the paperwork to run for governor of California
Following Kim Kardashian West and Kanye West, Jenner is the next member of her famous family to embark on a political career.
On Apr. 23, the former Olympian announced on social media that she would be running for the governor of California. In an official statement, Jenner, who’s a longtime Republican, revealed that she’s already filed the paperwork to run for the position.
“California has been my home for nearly 50 years,” she said. “I came here because I knew that anyone, regardless of their background or station in life, could turn their dreams into reality. But for the past decade, we have seen the glimmer of the Golden State reduced by one-party rule that places politics over progress and special interests over people. Sacramento needs an honest leader with a clear vision.”
News of Jenner’s bid for the governor of California comes a little more than a year after Republican and other conservative activists first pushed for a recall election to replace Democratic California Governor Gavin Newsom.
Not only did the former reality star pitch herself as a “compassionate disruptor” who will “providing a roadmap back to prosperity” for the state, but she also urged people to donate to her political campaign.
If she does move forward with her bid for governor, Jenner would be following in the footsteps of celebrities who have embarked on political careers, including late actor and former President Ronald Reagan and Terminator star Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Arnold Schwarzenegger thinks ‘anyone has a chance’ to be governor
During a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Schwarzenegger, who served as the governor of California from 2003 -2011, reacted to the news that Jenner intends to run for the position.
When asked if he thinks the former Olympian has a shot at winning the election, the actor shared that “anyone has a chance,” noting that the state’s residents are itching for a change.
“The key thing about all of this is, it doesn’t matter if it’s Caitlyn or it’s anyone else. Do you have a clear vision where you want to go? What are the kind of changes you want to make, and why are you qualified to become governor? That’s what you have to convince the people,” he told Kimmel. “All the other stuff is all nonsense because the press will attack you no matter who you are. They attacked me, but then in the end, I won.”
According to Schwarzenegger, “people are dissatisfied with what’s going on here in California” and insists that whoever becomes governor next would have to make changes to “straighten out all the mess we’re in right now.”
When asked if Jenner has reached out to him for advice or an endorsement, the Kindergarten Cop actor revealed that he would not disclose any details.
“I don’t talk about that because just about everyone that is thinking about running has called me,” Schwarzenegger explained. “I’m very good friends with Caitlyn, I have the utmost respect for her. But I’m also very good friends with Governor Newsom, and I’m good friends with all the other people that have contacted me and have asked me for advice about running or not running, and all those kind of things.”
