Stars Who Nominated Themselves – or Campaigned for Their Friends! – to Be Sexiest Man Alive

Jason Momoa

The reigning Sexiest Man Alive from 2019, John Legend, is ready to pass the torch – and he has someone in mind.

“Going by my Twitter mentions when I was named of who people said should have been picked over me, I got a lot of Jason Momoa,” Legend said in September. “That’s the one person that stood out in the Twitter feedback.”

Stephen Colbert

In response to Donald Trump falsely declaring himself the winner of the 2020 presidential election, Colbert decided that all titles were up for grabs and named himself this year’s Sexiest Man Alive. “I sensed a power vacuum in the sexy sphere,” he joked. “I’m coming for you, McConaughey.”

Kevin Hart

The actor and comedian thinks PEOPLE is making a big mistake by not giving him the title. “Why have I not heard that Kevin Hart is in the running?” he asked, while with his Jumanji costar (and Sexiest Man Alive 2016 winner) Dwayne Johnson. “I don’t know if people realize this, but I have a nice back and nice legs. Did you see me last summer? I went with smaller [swimsuit] trunks and nobody noticed!”

Snoop Dogg

The rapper decided he’d look good in the suit initially worn by John Legend when he won the title in 2019 – and posted a fake cover proving it to his Instagram.

Dev Patel

Ellen DeGeneres was so determined to get Patel the title, she mocked up a fake cover for him and suggested he hand it out to people as a way of campaigning. He turned her down, but agreed to “give it to my mom and she’ll put it at the entrance of our house.”

Matt Damon

Before he finally was named Sexiest Man Alive in 2007, Damon was the recipient of some good-natured ribbing from his celebrity pals who had already received the title, including George Clooney and Brad Pitt (both two-time winners before Damon was called up).

“I gotta say, this is a very big disappointment for Matt, because he did run a very good campaign,” Clooney joked to PEOPLE when he won in 2006, adding that Damon had come to him “like a politician would go to Clinton” to find out how be chosen for the cover himself.

When he won the next year, Damon thanked his friends for their support, joking that “all the campaigning” from Clooney and Pitt had paid off.

Idris Elba

Matthew McConaughey, the 2005 winner, put in a good word for Elba while promoting their film The Dark Tower in the summer of 2017.

“There’s one of us here who hasn’t got [Sexiest Man Alive] yet,” McConaughey said, laughing. “And I know he’s been sneaking around your top three for a while. It’s probably time.”

PEOPLE editors agreed, and Elba was crowned in the fall of 2018. (He also nominated himself for 2019, in an attempt to make history as the first-ever sequential winner!)

Dr. Anthony Fauci

America’s top expert on infectious diseases has spent much of 2020 in the spotlight due to the coronavirus pandemic – and many Americans don’t mind at all.

A petition with nearly 30,000 signatures demanded that he be named PEOPLE’s Sexiest Man Alive in 2020, noting, “His kind face and manner of speaking bring calm during the storm. … he is the definitive Sexiest Man Alive in 2020.”
