This Saturday Night Live<\/em> Sketch Stars Nick Jonas as a Trainer Caught in an Evil Workout Mirror

One of the more consistently entertaining ongoing threads in recent seasons of Saturday Night Live has been its sketches which poke fun at various elements of fitness culture, from the over-the-top elements of fitness classes like Barry’s Bootcamp, to extreme muscle transformations, to Peloton’s digital instructors. It continued that tradition last night, with a sketch all about another fitness trend: workout mirrors.

As with several of SNL‘s prior parodies, “Mirror Workout” starts with a revolving cast of trainers. The first is Nathan, played by (suitably jacked) guest host Nick Jonas, who demonstrates proper form and recites mantras like “swole is the goal.” Then there’s the upbeat “cardio queen” Krista, played by Heidi Gardner. So far, so expected.

But things get unsettling with the appearance of Shannon Delgado, played by Kate McKinnon. She isn’t like the other trainers. She’s not a coach; she’s just a regular person, who found herself supernaturally trapped in the mirror world after she was rude to a fortune teller, and who implores fitness buffs Chris Redd and Mikey Day to help free her every time it’s her turn to appear in the glass for a stretching routine.

WhileSNL fitness spoofs have always leaned into the wacky and absurd, this is by far the most surreal yet. The sketch takes an even weirder turn when it becomes apparent that Nick Jonas’ affable trainer character is in league with the demonic being Azuzel (Pete Davidson) who seems to be in charge of the mirror realm.

The whole thing plays out like a five-minute episode of The Twilight Zone, complete with a switcheroo caused by some enthusiastic post-workout chanting, and may well leave you wondering what Faustian bargain you might be entering into next time you sign up for a remote training session.
