Martin Lewis told his fans to get online and check if they can get freebies from their water company to save money on their bills.
In Thursday's (November 4) episode of the Martin Lewis Money Show, the personal finance guru explained the best way to squeeze your money further if you're on a meter.
Talking on the ITV show, he says: "There are 600,000 water-saving freebies available right now.
"What you can get depends on which water company you’re with.
"So put your postcode into the savewatersavemoney.co.uk website and remember it doesn't just cut the amount of water you use – so much of the water we use is heated – but it cuts your energy use too.
"But if you're on a water meter, you get the double saving."
He adds: "Now things on there are £20 shower heads, which reduce the amount of water coming through but hopefully you don't really feel the difference.
"That could save you £30 a year off your heat.
"Five-pound tap inserts are similar. Cistern bags that you put in your loo if you don't have the big flush and little flush button.
"It reduces the amount of water used when flushing the toilet, that can really be a big saving.
"All of these help, especially if you're on a water meter."
Martin Lewis then gave his simple rule for whether or not you're likely to save money on a water meter and suggests it's a good idea if you have fewer people in your home than bedrooms.
He explains: "So three bedrooms, two people – you would say yes.
"Water bills are based on the value of your house, the rateable value, so the bigger it is, the more you pay.
"Whereas meters depend on how much you use – the fewer people the less you use."
