Here's how to keep coats in check this winter

From the £36 supermarket steal to the high-end heritage look, here’s how to keep coats in check this winter

  • In winter, your coat takes centre stage — get it right and you feel pulled together
  • The heritage check coat is back in vogue, with designers sending out the style
  • From  George at Asda to Zara, Femail presents the best winter checks

Some people collect handbags, others hoard endless pairs of heels. But my own particular fashion fixation is a quest for The Perfect Coat.

In winter, your coat takes centre stage — get it right and you feel instantly pulled together.

Get it wrong (the wrong length for the outfit underneath, a belted style that gives you lumps and bumps over your chunky knit . . .) and there’s no saving the day.

I have fluffy faux shearling ones, vintage leopard ones, belted camel ones, but the nearest I’ve ever come to coat perfection is a beige-and-blue micro-check Crombie style in thick, springy wool from Whistles.

Trench, £199. John Lewis; trousers, £30, Topshop; loafers, £225, Russell and Bromley

Boyfriend coat, £159, suede skirt, £199, cashmere jumper, £99, all M&S; heels, £195, L.K.Bennett

Coat, £36, George at Asda; jumper, £9.99, H&M; trousers, £79.95, Massimo Dutti; loafers, £245, Russell and Bromley

For versatility, this mannish check coat is up there with the trench as a go-with-anything option.

Pulled on over jeans and a sweatshirt, my Whistles number is an instant outfit sharpener — as well as giving a chic masculine twist to girlie vintage dresses and knee boots.

So I’m delighted the heritage check coat is back in vogue this winter, with designers from Victoria Beckham to Balenciaga’s Demna Gvasalia sending out elegant, Savile Row-worthy styles.

Whether you know your ‘windowpane’ from your ‘blanket’, or your ‘graph’ from your ‘Tattersall’, checks all have one thing in common — they instantly signal sharp chic.

Coat, £450, L.K.Bennett; cashmere jumper, £269, ME+EM; trousers, £45, M&S; shoes, £39, Topshop

Coat, £249, Massimo Dutti; dress, £160, Jigsaw; boots, £95.99, and bag, £69.99, Zara

For a smart option over tailored outfits, avoid veering into drab territory by choosing a bold, bright check.

My bargain buy award of the week goes to George at Asda for a fabulous blue and cream single-breasted style that looks much more expensive than its £36 price tag.

And if you want a coat to shrug on over casual looks, a more muted, classic menswear check is often the perfect choice.

A grey or navy Prince of Wales check boyfriend coat will give flippy floral skirts or your favourite denim a bit of structure.

As for me, I’m off to put my shearling to the back of the wardrobe and give my Crombie a good steam.
