I've been having sex with our landlord in lieu of rent and my husband loves it

DEAR DEIDRE: MONEY is tight as my husband has lost his job. So I suggested I have sex with the landlord in lieu of paying the rent.

To my surprise, my husband agreed. I was secretly thrilled.

I’m 25 and a self-diagnosed sex addict with a colourful past, while my 30-year-old husband has vanilla tastes and has only ever had one sexual partner — me.

The next day I went to the landlord’s office and wasted no time in making my offer of payment in kind. He was only too happy to agree.

We ended up having sex on his couch and, if I’m honest, it was the best sex I’ve had in years — since before I met my husband.

As soon as I walked in the front door, my husband could tell what had happened. He didn’t ask for details and I didn’t volunteer them.

To my delight, just imagining my encounter really turned him on and we ended up having the best sex we’d ever had. And not just once either. The thrill of knowing what I’d done kept us in a state of excitement for days.

In one way, things couldn’t be better — the rent is paid, for now, and my husband and I are both happy.

But I’m starting to worry that my husband is no longer enough for me. I’d like to take things further and suggest we have an open marriage.

I’m sure he thinks this was a one-off and I’m concerned that if he says no I will get bored and want to cheat. But if he says yes, will it spoil our relationship anyway?

DEIDRE SAYS: Having sex with someone else has brought you and your husband together for now but it could easily tear you apart.

If he feels he’s not enough for you, it might destroy his self-esteem, which may already be fragile due to the job loss.

Now the dynamic in your relationship has changed, you need to get back on the same page by talking honestly.

If you have different sex drives, you might need to learn to compromise.

Perhaps rather than having sex with other people, you could share your fantasies about it with your husband to spice up your sex life. My support pack, Looking After Your Relationship, will help you to communicate better.

By having sex outside your marriage, you risk spreading coronavirus.

You also need to sort your finances out. Your landlord might not be happy to accept sex instead of money again, or indefinitely. You can get further advice from the National Debtline (nationaldebtline.org, 0808 808 4000).
