I've helped my wife reach her goal – she now no longer cares about me

DEAR DEIDRE: I’VE supported my partner for a decade – yet she can’t even ask how my day was.

We’ve been together for 22 years, married for 12 and we have two children, aged seven and ten. We’re both 44.

My wife had always wanted to be a lawyer – it was her determination that drew me to her in the first place.

I worked two jobs while she studied so I could pay for everything.

I didn’t want her juggling part-time work and a degree.

Initially she was really grateful, showing her thanks with little notes and cute dates. But now, almost ten years on, she couldn’t care less about me.

She is a qualified solicitor now but still expects me to pay for everything and always has an excuse for why she can’t clean or help with the kids.

She also never asks about my day.

If I do try to tell her, in less than a minute she switches the conversation back to her.

DEIDRE SAYS: Rather than appreciating the sacrifices you’ve made over the years, it sounds as if your wife has come to expect your silent support.

It’s important you sit her down and explain how you are feeling.

There may be changes you need to make to reset your relationship, so make some time to discuss what you both need.

If you’re still struggling to get your point across, reach out to relate.org.uk – their counsellors will be able to help you.
