Molly-Mae’s ‘new mum bun’ is the perfect evolution from her viral Love Island updo

There’s no arguing the fact that Molly-Mae Hague has been the unofficial reigning Queen of the Messy Buns since her stint in Love Island in 2019. Now, she’s evolving her signature updo to suit her life as a new mum.

If you watched the fifth Love Island series with Molly-Mae and Tommy Fury – who, if you’ve been hiding under a rock these past few weeks, is the father to their newborn daughter, Bambi – you’ll probably remember the internet went a little bit wild for Molly-Mae’s high bun. At the time, Twitter was ablaze with questions about how she managed to get such volume into the bun, and how she managed to keep the roots sleek and free from flyaways.

When Molly-Mae left the villa and rejoined the world of social media, the now-23 year old was stunned to learn of the interest in her “messy” hairstyle. The star even did a little video on how she gets the look, saying she just flips her head upside down, gathers all of the hair in the same direction and then twists it on the top of her hair.

Since 2019, Molly-Mae has tried out different hairstyles, but it would seem motherhood has put her firmly back on the bunwagon. However her updo has changed from being a voluminous twist at the top of her head to a “clean girl” slick knot that sits just below the top of her head.

New mums have much better things to worry about than their hair, granted, but if you’re keen to know how to recreate Molly-Mae’s sleek updo for yourself, Chris Appleton, hairstylist to the Kardashians, explains how you can do it in just a few minutes.

Molly-Mae sweeps all of her hair back because she has long layers that are able to all be pulled back neatly. But if you have a fringe, Chris says getting “a really clean part” in the centre using a pin tail comb is key to nailing this updo. Then, after you’ve slicked your hair into a pre-bun ponytail using a bristle brush, he suggests saturating the roots with hairspray for “a snatched and controlled look” – recommending Color Wow Cult Favorite Hairspray,£23 here. He also advises you to “follow the cheekbone for the perfect ponytail placement”.

Lastly, twist your ponytail clockwise and secure your bun for a look that truly matches Molly-Mae’s.

We might not have a newborn to worry about but we are going to give this speedy style a try before our next Zoom meeting.
