People spend years planning their fairytale wedding and splash thousands of pounds on making their dream big day come true.

But wedding guests from across the globe have shared shocking stories of brides and grooms who have been ‘jilted’ at the altar – including one man who decided to pose with a mannequin in the photos after his wife-to-be didn’t turn up.

The jaw-dropping thread kicked off after an anonymous British person took to Mumsnet to ask people if they know anyone who has been jilted, or whether cancelling a wedding last minute is ‘very rare’.

They went on to say how they watched a movie where the bride jilts her groom, while their friend said afterwards that she knew someone whose wedding was called off the night before after she discovered he was having an affair.

The poster urged others to share their dramatic wedding stories, with responses including a man who walked out as soon as he’d tied the knot, and another who dumped his girlfriend on their wedding day – before marrying her ten days later.

Starting off the debate, the woman penned: ‘I also remember as a teen my parents coming home only a couple of hours after they left for a wedding.

‘The groom didn’t show up to the service, he was seen leaving the hotel in the car of a woman waiting outside shock is jilting very rare? Have you ever known anyone jilted or a wedding cancelled last minute?’

The question prompted floods of responses from other users who shared their shocking wedding tales that belong on a soap opera rather than real life.

One woman revealed that her husband’s friend was jilted at the alter around 30 years ago, which prompted the groom to take his wedding photographs with a mannequin instead.

She said the woman was believed to have run off with a man from her workplace, adding: ‘Not me but DH about 30 years ago. His friends brother was jilted at the altar, DH said it was excruciating sitting there realising she wasn’t coming.

‘The groom went to a local shop that hired wedding clothes out and got his photo took with a mannequin in a bridal dress then they all went to the pub. I think she ran off with a man from work.’

Meanwhile, another poster revealed that a pregnant bride was jilted the night before the wedding, but a lot of the guests went anyway as it was a pricey foreign wedding.

They wrote: ‘Yep. Pregnant bride jilted night before altar at insanely pricey foreign wedding, to which we had all paid massive bills to attend. A lot of guests went anyway… leaving the bride in floods alone at home in London.’

Another person told how she knew a couple who broke up a few days before the wedding, but were convinced to go through with it anyway by the bride’s mother because they’d spent £30,000 on the service.

She recalled: ‘Not jilted, but I went to a wedding where the couple had broken up a few days before. The bride’s mother convinced her to go through with it because they’d spent about £30,000 on it and at least wanted the party grin.

‘They went through with the vows, posed for photos, the groom did a speech etc but they didn’t really speak to each other. It was a weird atmosphere confused. They’re divorced now.’

Another shared their own baffling tale, commenting: ‘I didn’t attend the wedding but someone I worked with married a man from overseas.

‘Standing at the altar at the end of the ceremony he apparently announced “thanks, I needed to be married to stay in the country” and walked out of the church never to be seen again. She had a mental breakdown and ended up in hospital for a time.’

Elsewhere, another woman admitted that her ex-boyfriend dumped his girlfriend, who he had had an affair with while he was with her, on their wedding day, before then marrying her just ten days later.

She penned: ‘My ex dumped his GF (he had an affair with her), then went back to her, then dumped her again on their wedding day, then went back again and married her ten days later. Then wanted to stay in touch with me. F**king idiot.’

Other unbelievable confessions included a couple who called off the wedding after the engagement party, and a groom who ran off with his lover.
