Johnny Manziel can’t forgive himself for lost NFL career
Johnny Football is back.
The highs and lows of Johnny Manziel’s football career all seemed to be wrapped up in one game Saturday night for his debut in the Fan Controlled Football (FCF) league.
The former Heisman Trophy winner completed 1 of 5 passes for 11 yards while adding 67 yards and a touchdown on eight carries, including an impressive 38-yard scramble on his first snap. His team, the Zappers, lost 48-44, but Manziel was still having a good time.
“The product will keep getting better as the weeks go on,’’ Manziel said after the game. “Good start even with the loss. You know, win or lose we booze on the Zappers.”
Saturday’s game in the new 7-on-7 league, in which fans can call offensive plays, marked Manziel’s first football action since 2019 when he played for the Memphis Express in the Alliance of American Football. He has bounced around from league to league after playing his last NFL snap with the Browns in 2015.
The 28-year-old was feeling like it after the game but still enjoyed his FCF debut.
“Feels like I’m super washed up, but still had a blast,” he said. “That was the most fun I’ve had in a while.”
Manziel looked most like “Johnny Football” on his first snap, when he took off on a scramble down the left sideline and bounced off two defenders while spinning around with the end zone in sight. But he was eventually brought down from inside the 5-yard line.
“You see me get caught from behind, too?” he said. “Times have changed. We’re definitely in 2021.”
Manziel was sacked twice, including once in the end zone for a safety. His touchdown run came on something of a zone read, keeping the ball for himself and getting in from two yards out.
“We’re having a blast,” he said. “This league is fun, and everybody that’s here is having a good time, so we’ll keep getting better.”
