Wayne Mardle disagrees with Fallon Sherrock decision and fears backlash

Sky Sports darts pundit Wayne Mardle has said he disagrees with the controversial decision to award Fallon Sherrock a World Championship spot.

The best-known female player in the game has been jettisoned into the tournament by the PDC despite finishing outside the top two in the Women’s Series, behind Lisa Aston and emerging star Beau Greaves.

Ashton and Greaves were already assured of places at the Alexandra Palace, with Sherrock, who made history in 2019/20 by reaching the third round, set to miss out.

However, the PDC announced at the start of the week that they had changed the qualifying criteria which granted a place to the winner of the Women’s World Matchplay in July. As Sherrock won that tournament, she will join Ashton and Greaves at the Ally Pally, with the first round draw taking place on Monday.

The decision has attracted criticism from darts fans, with many accusing the PDC of favouritism towards Sherrock.

And Mardle has given his take on the move after being asked about it by a fan on social media. The former World Championship semi-finalist can understand why the decision has been taken but does not agree with it. He also expressed his sympathy for Sherrock, who regularly comes in for criticism on social media.

He tweeted: “No. I’ve said this many times this week. I understand commercially it makes sense, but I feel if there was a spot unallocated for it should go to the next in the order of merit. I fear a backlash towards Fallon, and it’s not her fault.”

Many fans agreed with Mardle’s sentiments, with one tweeting: “Fair play Wayne, this is spot on.”

Another said: “PDC and Sky Sports are responsible for all this hate towards her.”

Another pointed out: “This is not in @Fsherrock’s control and it’s not her fault, so I would like to think there will be no backlash towards her as there is no place for that. I hope that Fallon goes out there and puts in some career best performances as she thoroughly deserves to be there, back her up.”
