Good Morning Britain host Ben Shephard was visibly emotional on Friday as he discussed the news that Kate Garraway's husband Derek Draper has returned home from hospital after spending a year in intensive care.

The 53-year-old former Labour lobbyist was rushed to hospital in March last year after contracting coronavirus.

Ben and co-host Ranvir Singh kicked off the latest edition of the ITV breakfast show by announcing that Derek is now home with Kate and their two young children Darcey and Billy.

Kicking off the programme, Ben told viewers: "We are all smiling this morning, aren’t we?"

Ranvir replied: “It’s made everybody smile."

Ben continued: "The news that he has been able to travel home and is living at home now with Kate, Darcey and Bill.

"Honestly this means an awful lot to us because we’ve shared this with Kate personally, but when we come in and see the messages from you guys and how pleased you are.

"It’s the first step in a very, very long journey for Derek and Kate and for the family trying to work out how it’s going to unfold. There is 24 hour care for him at home.

“It’s a progress thing isn’t it," Ranvir said.

"Now doctors are saying he is responding regularly which is an amazing thing, but there’s going to be a lot of help needed for Kate and the family."

"It’s not so much joy unconfined, but it’s a relief, palpable relief for all of us."

Viewers rushed to their keyboards to share some supportive messages for Kate following the news.

Taking to Twitter, one fan penned: "Delighted to hear Derek Draper is to continue his recovery at home. Haven’t stopped thinking about him and his family all year."

Another added: "Very happy to hear that Kate’s husband is coming back home. All the best to her and her family."

While a third person posted: "Good news for the family.

Lets hope this helps to speed up Dereks recovery."

A fourth viewer wrote: "This is great news so happy for Kate and the family. I wish Derek the best for his recovery."

"This has genuinely mad my Friday so happy for Kate and the kids and Derek, onwards and upwards," a fifth social media user said.

Ranvir and Ben went on to tell viewers watching at home that Kate will be on the show before 8am to discuss Derek's return to the family home.

Former Strictly star Ranvir, 43, said: "I don't think she slept much last night.

Ben, 46, added: "I don't think she slept at all."

"Theres a lot of adapting of the house to do and a lot of adapting to the way the family live, of course."

Derek has come a long way in the last 12 months, having been placed in an induced coma while in the intensive care unit last spring.

Though the father of two has regained consciousness and is now able to communicate, the virus has caused blood clots in his lungs, leaving him diabetic with damage to his liver and pancreas.

His health journey has astounded doctors, who previously revealed the infection in Derek's lungs were the highest they had seen throughout the pandemic.
