Marlon Dingle (played by Mark Charnock) had his world turned upside-down when he suffered a stroke earlier this year. He was left heartbroken by the prospect of not being able to work at the Woolpack again as he loved being a chef. Marlon actor Mark has opened up to Express.co.uk about what the future holds for his character as he continues to recover.

Marlon has been struggling to adapt to life after having a debilitating stroke in March.

In scenes yet to air, Marlon becomes aware he is getting close to being able to work again thanks to months of physiotherapy.

However, he starts to wonder if his old job at the Woolpack may be given to someone else after learning the pub is looking for another chef.

He later teams up with Victoria Sugden (Isabel Hodgins), leaving fans wondering if she will help him at the pub until he is strong enough to run the kitchen on his own.

Marlon actor Mark has exclusively opened up to Express.co.uk about his character’s recovery.

He shared: “The only thing I can talk about in terms of Marlon is his progress. He is making a slow amount of progress.”

Mark added: “They [the writers] have had to be consistent with this and have a very realistic timespan.

“They don’t want to do it quickly, they want it to be real and we are lucky as a soap that we can do that and take that time with it.

“It’s a big responsibility to tell a story like this so they ought to be doing it over a realistic period of time which could be months or even years.”

Discussing Marlon’s stroke, he added: “It’s important that we see the light as people need that, soaps need to reflect real life but they also need to bring a little bit of joy.”

While Marlon’s health may be struggling, his romance with his new wife Rhona Goskirk (Zoe Henry) is continuing to blossom.

The pair tied the knot in St Mary’s Church this summer and Marlon summoned the strength to walk down the aisle.

He also remained safe during the soap’s dramatic storm week which claimed the lives of several characters.

The village is coming to terms with the recent losses of Liv Flaherty (Isobel Steele), Al Chapman (Michael Wildman), Harriet Finch (Katherine Dow Blyton) and Faith Dingle (Sally Dexter).

As it stands, Marlon’s relative Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) could serve life behind bars for Al’s murder, even though viewers know his son Kyle Winchester (Huey Quinn) was the real killer.

Kerry Wyatt (Laura Norton), who was engaged to Al, told Chas Dingle (Lucy Pargeter) she would be taking some time away from the village after learning Al was cheating on her.

Little did she know the woman he was sleeping with was Chas who she was confiding in.

It appears as though it is only a matter of time before the truth comes out about Chas’ affair.

How will Marlon feel when he learns his cousin has been unfaithful to his best friend Paddy Kirk (Dominic Brunt)?

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV.
