Gogglebox stars leaves NTA viewers in hysterics with very boozy acceptance speech

GOGGLEBOX stars left National Television Award viewers in hysterics last night with their boozy acceptance speech during last night's ceremony.

The Channel 4 show won the gong for Factual Entertainment Programme for the seventh year in a row yesterday.

And true to form, they sent some of the series favourites to the bash to accept – with siblings Pete and Sophie Sandiford, and Julie and Tom Malone taking to the stage.

But the group had been clearly taking advantage of the free-flowing fizz and tickled fans with their antics.

Sophie began speaking first, with she and brother Pete – who it was revealed had become a dad at the ceremony – walking on stage with a glass of champagne in their hands.

She waved at the crowed as she gushed: "Wow, hi everyone – I just want to start by saying thank you so much to everyone who voted…"

But she appeared to lose her train of thought, with Pete joking: "Your mind's gone!" to which his sister giggled: "It's the drink, sorry!"

Pete took over before Julie also spoke into the mic – with music starting to play them out as she finished speaking.

But her husband Tom was unimpressed, rushing to the mic as he shouted: "Hang on, I want to say something for all the lorry drivers out there, you know what I mean?

"And the armed forces – yeah, the armed forces did such a great job lately."

The TV favourite had been seen downing his drink before making his way up to the stage.

The stars laughed as they made their way off-stage, and viewers at home flocked to Twitter to share their amusement.

One fan joked: "I can smell the tequila from here!"

Another echoed: "I love this! #Gogglebox #NTAs they are just real people, not Instagram influencers, this is what real life telly contributors used to be like."

A third agreed: "Speech of the night right there."

But there were also tears, with Julie staying sombre amid the group as she dedicated the award to the four Gogglebox stars who have passed away in recent months.

She shared: "On behalf of the Gogglebox family, I would just like to say a massive thanks for this award and on a sadder note, I'd like to dedicate it to all the people we've lost over the last 18 months.

"Andy, Pete, Mary and everybody's favourite grandma June who has been reunited with Leon."

Original cast member Andy Michael tragically passed away last month, as well as Mary Cook at the age of 92.

Pete McGarry died earlier this year, and June Bernicoff in May 2020 – three years after her beloved husband Leon.
