Lorraine Kelly’s biggest on-air spats and outrageous moments as she turns 61

Lorraine Kelly is celebrating her 61st birthday today while in lockdown with the rest of the UK.

The ITV star, who hosts her own morning chat show, has been presenting various programmes since 1993 when she hosted GMTV until 2010.

She's also presented This Morning (2003–2005, 2016), Daybreak (2012–2014) and Good Morning Britain (2020), so it's no wonder the TV star has built up a collection of golden moments on the screen.

From bust-ups, flirting with Hollywood guests and fiery rants, Lorraine has certainly entertained viewers in her 35 years of presenting.

In honour of her birthday, here's a look back at her most explosive on-screen moments of her career.

Her feud with Esther McVey

One of Lorraine's biggest moments happens to go back to when her career took off in the 90s.

It was also the decade which sparked a mighty feud between her and Esther McVey.

During a live link to ITV’s Lorraine from Good Morning Britain in 2019, the pair's famous row was brought to life once again when GMB host Susanna Reid asked Lorraine if she remembered Esther from her GMTV days where they shared a dressing room.

It led to Lorraine replying: "Yeah, yes I do," before moving very swiftly on to what was coming up on her show.

In typical Piers Morgan fashion he asked the question on most people's mind, "do you get on now?".

To which Lorraine replied: "I don’t remember, love, I don’t remember at all, it was an awful long time ago."

So, what happened between Lorraine and Esther for tension to be there nearly 30 years later?

It appears something may have gone down while they shared a dressing room but neither of them have expressed exactly what went down.

Back in 2019, following Lorraine's comments on Esther to Piers, Esther spoke out later that exact same day.

Speaking to Piers, McVey played down rumours that had sparked on social media that there was a feud between the pair.

She said: "I'm baffled, because I had my own show since 1992, and I don't actually think she joined until five years later.

"And as far as sharing dressing rooms go, it wasn't really like that, it's not palatial like it is now… it was just a little room that everybody sort of shared that we got ready in.

"I'll be genuinely honest, I don't remember her being… it was such a long time ago. My show was totally separate from that show so there was no interaction to be honest."

When she raged at Jennifer Arcuri

One of Lorraine's most iconic and well remembered TV moments was when she lost her rage at Jennifer Arcuri.

The American technology entrepreneur was joined on GMB by hosts Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid in 2019 to talk about her relationship with Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

But following the chat, Lorraine was least impressed and hit out at Jennifer for "not answering questions".

After wrapping their interview, Piers introduced Lorraine who immediately shared her thoughts on the discussion with Jennifer.

Lorraine said to Piers: "God, that was crazy wasn’t it? What was the point?

"Come on and not answering any questions, what was the point in that?"

Turning to their guest, Piers asked: "Jennifer, do you want to respond to Lorraine?"

A gobsmacked Jennifer merely responded: "Sorry?"

Lorraine went on: "What is the point of you coming on the TV to clear the air and then you don’t say anything?"

Hitting back, Jennifer said: "Well I believe I said a few things. What is it that you’re looking for that I should say?"

Arguing, Lorraine responded: "Well you didn’t answer any of the questions that were put to you and I just don’t see the point of you coming on to be honest.

"Anyway let me tell you what’s coming on after half past."

The remarks from Lorraine came after Jennifer was asked if her relationship with the PM was an "affair".

Jennifer told Piers and Susanna: "I’m not going to answer the question, but as you can tell there was a very special relationship there and when it did come out, half the people already assumed the affair and told me to admit.

"The other half just wanted me to deny, deny, deny."

Swipe at Piers Morgan

  • Lorraine Kelly branded 'bully' for scathing attack on Megan Barton Hanson's face

When you put two fiery characters on the same platform, there is going to come a blow at some point – despite them appearing to be friends most of the time.

In November of this year, Lorraine couldn't help but take a swipe at the controversial journalist as she praised his co-host Susanna Reid for her "awe inspiring restraint".

As Susanna marked her fifth anniversary of presenting beside the outspoken Piers, Lorraine made the cheeky comment.

It came after Susanna retweeted a post from Piers, which read: "Happy 5th Anniversary ⁦@susannareid100 – you lucky devil! ⁦@GMB."

The Lorraine host then added in view of her 619,000 Twitter followers: "Happy Anniversary!

"Surely there must be some sort of medal that can be awarded to @susannareid100 for her patience, endurance and awe inspiring restraint in not pressing the button on ejector seat I secretly had fitted xxx."

Dominic Cummings faced the wrath of Lorraine

In most ways, 2020 has been a rather bizarre and scary year but nothing can beat the wrath of Lorraine Kelly.

And Dominic Cummings was certainly not safe of that when the government advisor took a trip to Durham amid the coronavirus crisis.

Lorraine hit out after she was welcomed onto GMB by hosts Ben Shephard and Charlotte Hawkins on Bank Holiday Monday.

And after seeing a poll which suggested 80 per cent of GMB viewers want Boris Johnson to sack Mr Cummings, Lorraine let her hair down and let rip at him.

The presenter fumed: "It doesn't surprise me. Not at all.

"What I find really shocking about it is… no apology. The arrogance of it. The arrogance is breathtaking."

Lorraine continued: "Do you not think when the spin doctor becomes the story, it's time to go? That's always been the case in the past but doesn't appear to be so now.

"I can completely understand why people are so angry."

Flirting with guests

And what would a chat show be without the host occasionally flirting with one of their guests?

For Lorraine that golden moment was when Hollywood star Richard E. Grant appeared on her show to talk about his new TV series Dispatches From Elsewhere.

During their chat, Lorraine gushed over Hugh Jackman after Richard asked about her having a bit of a crush on him.

Richard asked: "I’ve heard you have a thing for Hugh Jackman, is that true? Do you have a Hugh Jackman statue in your garden?"

She responded: "I’ve not got a Hugh Jackman statue in my garden but that doesn’t mean that I wouldn’t.

"I’m actually inspired by you. I mean, who doesn’t love Hugh Jackman? It’s the law, you have to!"

Richard asked: “Which part of Hugh Jackman do you want as a statue?”

Giggling, Lorraine said: "All of it, just all of it. He’s gorgeous! Almost as gorgeous as you Richard E. Grant.

"It’s fantastic to talk to you."

As the interview came to and end, GMB's DR Hilary couldn't help but poke fun at his co-workers "disgraceful flirting".

Lorraine told the doctor: “Isn’t he great? I love him.”

Dr Hilary replied: “You are a disgraceful flirt!"
