Pirates of the Caribbean: Johnny Depp gave Jack Sparrow unstable sway for clever reason

Johnny Depp discusses Pirates of the Caribbean in 2017

Pirates of the Caribbean introduced the peculiar Jack Sparrow in Curse of the Black Pearl, a character with a collection of quirks and catchphrases. While some of these oddities were improvised by Depp throughout the series, his constant swaying was given a lot more thought.

It looked as if Sparrow had been swaying all the time because he was either drunk or affected by excessive drinking.

But it has instead been revealed Sparrow’s unstable standing and walking is actually a result of his life-long career as a pirate.

The character’s sea legs showed his ability to stand up straight and walk whilst sailing the seven seas.

After spending so many years on ships, Sparrow went on to feel the effects of the constant bobbing on land instead.

It is important to note that, when Sparrow is on a boat of any kind in the five films, he stands completely balanced.

On top of this, it could also be argued that Sparrow is smarter than he seems.

The rascal has outsmarted his foes in the past, and his constant swaying and bobbing could be a ploy to disarm any who might oppose him.

This may have been displayed during Sparrow’s sword fight against Captain Barbosa (Geoffrey Rush) in Curse of the Black Pearl. Throughout the entire fight he has no trouble keeping his balance.

Depp put a lot of thought into making his character stand out from the crowd during filming.

One of the most notable inclusions into Sparrow’s persona was the word “savvy”, which Depp improvised during shooting.

Not everything was easy for the Hollywood star during the film’s production, though. The star has since spoken up on having mixed feelings about kissing co-star Kiera Knightley.

Speaking in an interview about the movie years later, Depp explained: “Kissing someone you are not romantically involved with is always awkward.”

Depp added: “But the fact that Keira is 20-something years younger than me made it infinitely more awkward.”

While filming the 2003 film Depp was 39-years-old, while Knightley was just 17-years-old.

He later added: “Still, she was a good sport about it and we did what we had to do.”

On the other hand, Knightley was not too bothered by the on-screen kiss.

Speaking in an interview, Knightley later said: “I couldn’t ask for a better kissing scene with Johnny Depp actually.

“I think my 14-year-old self was yelping with pleasure. It was fantastic! What more can a girl ask for?

“I’ve got Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom and I get to kiss both of them. It’s wonderful!”
