Richard Curtis is 'working on updated version of Mr Bean'

Richard Curtis has reportedly lined up his next project, with the writer said to be working on a new version of Mr Bean.

Rowan Atkinson has played comedy favourite Mr Bean since 1990, and could be making a comeback as the character in a new-look version written by Richard.

As the Sun reports, fans can look out for an older, grumpier version of Mr Bean soon.

Richard said: ‘Old Bean is what we’re now thinking of doing.’

Viewers can look back at more than 30 years of the character with the ITV documentary Happy Birthday Mr Bean this evening (Jan 10).

The latest comments are exciting news for fans – but they come just days after Mr Bean star Rowan said he didn’t enjoy playing the character.

Speaking in an interview with Radio Times, Rowan said: ‘I don’t much enjoy playing him. The weight of responsibility is not pleasant. I find it stressful and exhausting, and I look forward to the end of it.’

He added: ‘Having made an animated TV series, we’re now in the foothills of developing an animated movie for Mr Bean – it’s easier for me to perform the character vocally than visually.’

After first appearing in 1990, Mr Bean went on to star in his own series and animated spin-off, as well as the films Bean (1997) and Mr. Bean’s Holiday (2007).

Happy Birthday Mr Bean on Sunday airs at 8pm this evening on ITV.
