Former Coronation Street star and Hollyoaks newcomer Katie McGlynn has opened up about her Strictly Come Dancing experience so far and revealed she feels inspired by the late Caroline Flack.

Caroline won the twelfth series of the show in 2014 – a triumph which has remained a huge part of the star's legacy.

In a conversation with OK! and other press, the soap star and self-confessed Strictly megafan was asked if she found any past contestants particularly inspirational.

She replied: "There are so many, but I think Caroline Flack was just incredible. If you watch her journey throughout, she was just insanely amazing."

Katie also cited her "friend" Lisa Riley as another one of her favourite Strictly stars, adding: "She was just incredible."

Katie went on: "I love the stories where they're not dancers and they're the underdog throughout the whole series, but they actually learn and then pull it all together near the end."

The 28 year old admitted that she's "probably be the underdog" this time around, but said she "hopes" she'll "actually learn how to dance and have a positive journey."

In regards to her dancing abilities, Katie admitted that they're "not anything she [I] could write home about." She added: "I’m not a polished dancer on a night out I’m just there to make people laugh usually."

She also admitted that she doesn't think she's "sexy" and is actually "really awkward" – so the steamier dances like the Paso Doble and Tango will be "interesting" for her.

"On the day I do those dances, I'm just gonna have to morph into a different character," she added.

Katie's Strictly stint will mark the first time she's appearing on our screens as herself, after years of playing roles in soaps and dramas.

The star admitted that Strictly will "definitely" be a relief from the heavier work she's had to do in the past.

"I love doing challenging storylines," she told us. "But when it's very serious, it can drain you and I am normally a positive person. I always find the funny side of the most tragic events.

"I want to laugh and I want to dance and have a good time and hopefully make some lifelong friends."

That being said, the star did reveal that she was "very nervous" about viewers seeing a new side to her.
