Fearless leader June Osborne (played by Elisabeth Moss) was left alone and bleeding in the woods in the season three finale, and she was later rescued by her fellow handmaidens. However, fans believe that new character Esther (played by Mckenna Grace), who played a vital role in June’s recovery, will meet a grisly end for her actions in season four.
WARNING: Spoilers for The Handmaid’s Tale season four below.
In the season four premiere, titled Pigs, a group of handmaids meet Esther Keyes, a 14-year-old married to the elderly Commander Keyes (Bill MacDonald).
The handmaids take a severely wounded June to a Mayday safehouse, which is run by Esther.
In the show, Mayday is a secret resistance group that operated to bring down the totalitarian state from the inside.
After being brutalised by her husband for years, Esther begins poisoning him, which allows her to help June and the women.
However, with the character becoming increasingly involved with the resistance group, many fans believe this will be her downfall in the future.
One fan took to Reddit to discuss the character, saying: “This might be just me. But I think It might be a good plot line to kill off Esther, after a really good rebellion she leads.
“I’m talking brutally, Gilead making Esther a statement for all of those who chose to rebel. Like they do by hanging people on the wall,” they concluded.
Esther has proven herself to be smart and capable of leading a resistance, especially as she has successfully been keeping her husband quiet by poisoning him so that he doesn’t discover her involvement with Mayday.
Esther’s heavy involvement with the group is becoming more and more dangerous, so will this lead to a chilling death for the young girl?
The teenager managed to secure the farmhouse so that June could recover and she later executed one of her rapists.
However, Esther is, sadly, captured and forced to become a handmaiden once again and tries to resist torture by Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd).
She later succumbs to Gilead’s rules but is the resourceful Esther plotting something else?
One fan certainly thinks so, writing on Reddit: “I have a very strong feeling that Esther is PLOTTING.”
“Given what we know about her character thus far, there’s no way she’s not,” the fan continued.
“There’s so many different ways it could go at this point that I just don’t know, but I think it’s going to be epic.”
Other fans agreed that Esther must have been introduced in season four to aid June with destroying Gilead once and for all.
Another said: “Esther is gonna be a tiny little boss, I just know it.”
Another speculated that Esther will also play a major role in Aunt Lydia’s downfall.
They commented: “I think [June and Esther] will kill Lydia.
“Esther will make the poison and Janine will bring it in Lydia’s tea.”
Considering that Esther has been quietly poisoning her elderly husband for years, it seems highly likely that the teenager would do so again to stop Gilead.
“There’s no way Esther isn’t plotting and June is for sure gonna get her revenge. She always does,” someone else stated, hinting that Esther and June will team up again in season five.
Hopefully, the character won’t meet a brutal end for her increasingly risky actions.
The Handmaid’s Tale season four is available to watch now on Hulu in the US. Season four is currently airing in the UK on Channel 4, and continues on Sunday at 9pm.
