Endeavour has just finished airing on ITV and season eight of the TV drama saw a young Inspector Morse (played by Shaun Evans) tackle another murder mystery. Fans were worried he had spiralled out of control due to his drinking problem, but he managed to rope a group of strangers into helping him solve the case. Express.co.uk has all you need to know about when Endeavour will be returning for season nine.
When is Endeavour coming back?
The detective drama returned for season eight in September 2021, with the three-episode season concluding on September 26.
The series finale received mixed reviews, with some viewers slamming it for being too much like an Agatha Christie story.
There was plenty of backlash from fans who described it as feeling like a game of “Cluedo”.
However, others praised the change in theme and said it was a refreshing way to end the series.
As for when Endeavour is coming back, at this moment in time season nine is yet to be confirmed.
The viewership ratings for the season finale are yet to come to light, and ITV will use these to assess the show’s future.
If the series is renewed for a ninth instalment, fans may have to wait until late summer 2022, following a delayed release of season eight.
Usually, the show airs its season debut in January or February, but series eight did not begin until September.
With this in mind, it seems the ninth outing may also face a delay as the creators await feedback from ITV.
Fans have taken to Twitter to share their thoughts on the show’s short season.
Mike Grumpy said: “I was looking forward to #Endeavour tonight but paper says it’s #midsomermurders.
“Is anyone left in that village to get murdered ffs! Pouting face What’s happened to endeavour?” [Sic]
Gordon K Tozer said: “I would have thought a ninth series was a no-brainer after the finale of series 8?”
Alexandra Butschko added: “How am I supposed to get through this day today without a new episode of #Endeavour?
“I think the only way to do this is to watch an episode from season 8 on ITV Hub tonight after duty.”
The show’s creator, Russell Lewis, was unable to confirm whether season nine had been given the green light.
As the series continues, Inspector Morse slowly ages into the original detective fans remember.
Rachel Burton said on Twitter: “Watching Shaun Evans slowly become the Morse of John Thaw has been wonderful and heartbreaking (because we all know how it ends – and therefore that this incarnation of Morse can’t go on that much longer) #Endeavour.”
With this in mind, it may be that there is not much of Morse’s story left to tell before it goes full circle.
Hopefully, it will not be long before ITV confirms whether Morse and his colleagues will return.
Actor Evans recently admitted he is yet to watch the original John Thaw series.
He told The Guardian: “I was born in 1980, so wasn’t the right age when Inspector Morse went out.
“I was working in America when they offered me the part so it was easier to go and buy one of the books.”
He does have all of the episodes on DVD but said he was yet to sit down and watch them.
He said: “Maybe I will when we are done,” indicating he could return once more.
Endeavour is available to watch on the ITV Hub.
