JJ Chalmers is one of the stars making up the Strictly Come Dancing celebrity line-up for 2020 and competing for the glitter-ball trophy.
He has been partnered with pro-dancer Amy Dowden for the show and the pair have already formed a close bond in rehearsals, revealing that they ‘completely understand each other in so many ways.’
So who is JJ Chalmers and which member of the royal family will be watching the show at home and cheering him on?
Who is JJ Chalmers?
JJ Chalmers is a former Royal Marine reservist who competed to claim gold in the Invictus Games in London in 2014 and has since carved out a career in broadcasting as TV presenter.
The 33-year-old, whose full name is John-James Chalmers, grew up in Renton, Scotland and started his career in the army.
He found fame through his work as a TV presenter and his affiliation with Prince Harry’s Invictus Games.
He is known to have become a close friend of Prince Harry’s through his connection with the event and the armed forces and as such was invited to the Duke’s wedding to Meghan Markle in 2018.
JJ Chalmers career: from Royal Marine reservist to Invictus Games gold medallist
JJ joined the Royal Marines Reserve in 2005 while studying at university before transferring to regular service in 2010.
In May 2011, whilst servng in Helmand, Afghanistan with 42 Commando, he suffered life-changing injuries from an IED blast. He lost two fingers, suffered facial and leg injuries and his right elbow was badly damaged.
Describing his injuries to Help For Heroes, a charity for which JJ is now an ambassador, he said: ‘My hands were smashed up, my arm was sewn into my stomach and I felt like I’d never walk again. I couldn’t imagine going home. When I finally did, I had no idea how to live.’
On the road to recovery, JJ decided to take on the challenge of competing in the inaugural Invictus Games ,brainchild of Prince Harry, when they launched in London in 2014 – something he describes as the ‘greatest week of my life’.
After winning a gold and bronze medal for recumbent cycling and also a bronze in the 4x100m track at the Invictus Games, JJ went on to pursue a career as a presenter.
The Paralympic athlete has gone on to present the 2016 Paralympics in Rio for Channel 4, as well as fronting coverage for National Paralympic Day and hosting a show for the IPC Athletics World Championships in Doha.
After competing in 2014, JJ went on to host the Invictus Games in 2016.
Does JJ Chalmers have a wife and children?
JJ is married and has two children. He married his wife, Kornelia Chitursko, back in 2015.
The couple have two children together, a son and a daughter.
