Who was Asha’s mum in Coronation Street?

Asha Alahan (Tanisha Gorey) has had a tough time of late on Coronation Street – not only have the teenager’s nude photos been circulated widely and leaked to a porn site, but her father Dev (Jimmi Harkishin) has been less than supportive in her time of need.

In coming episodes, Dev will discover what has transpired and attempt to take matters into his own hands by reporting the incident to the school.

Of course, not before he blames Asha and tells her that her late mother would have been ashamed of her.

So, who was Asha’s mother?

Who was Sunita in Coronation Street and how did she die?

Sunita Alahan (Shobna Gulati) was the former wife of Dev and resident pint puller at the Rovers who appeared on the soap between 2001 and 2013.

She originally landed on the street after she fled from an arranged marriage in Mumbai, finding shelter at Dev’s house.

When she was disowned by her family, Dev offered her a shop at the Corner Shop but the relationship between the pair was mostly platonic until Sunita was diagnosed with a brain tumour.

Realising how much she meant to him, he left his then-partner Maya Sharma (Sasha Behar) who responded to the rejection by smashing up their flat and framing Sunita for an illegal immigration scam.

In 2006 Sunita gave birth to twins Aadi and Asha but not before finding out Dev had secretly fathered several other children in the past.

The pair divorced, but later got back in 2010.

A few strings of relationships and flirtations later, Sunita sadly died after she found herself trapped in the Rovers, which was set on fire by her then ex-lover Karl Munroe (John Michie).

Actress Shobna praised her ‘amazing’ send-off back in 2013.

‘It feels great and I feel so pleased,’ she said.

‘The Rovers itself burning was hard to watch. When you watched the inside burning there was Betty’s picture in flames, along with all those memories.

‘Sunita was a barmaid there too so she had an inside out relationship with the pub.

‘When I finished filming the fire I cried. I thought how awful it must be to actually be in that kind of disaster. It must be horrific because the heat was horrendous. I could feel the burn.’

Shobna has since appeared on Loose Women and River City.

Coronation Street continues tonight at 7pm on ITV
