Yellowstone’s Dutton family have had to contend with several hard-tempered antagonists over the course of its first three seasons, with Josh Holloway’s Roarke being one of the most memorable. Originally joining the cast in season three, the star was hoping for a different role at first. But who did Holloway want to play in the Paramount Network series?
What role did Roarke star Josh Holloway originally want to play?
Crashing into the third season of Yellowstone was Roarke, a charming and determined antagonist looking to get his hands on the Yellowstone Ranch.
Roarke enters the series as a neighbour for John Dutton (played by Kevin Costner), as his family owns the nearby Cross Creek Ranch.
As a hedge fund manager, Roarke sought to claim the land on Yellowstone and it soon became clear he was willing to do whatever it takes for it.
All fingers are pointed directly at Roarke for the shocking season three finale, which saw John, Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes), and Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) all close to death.
The first promo for season four hasn’t provided much detail on the trio’s fate, with it simply teasing “revenge is worth the wait” combined with a series of flashbacks from seasons gone by.
However, there is a brief new clip which shows Rip (Cole Hauser) tend to John on the roadside where he was shot, pleading with his mentor not to die.
While it isn’t confirmed Roarke caused the attacks, he will still prove to be a major foil for the Dutton family in the fourth season.
Josh Holloway didn’t always want to be the big bad of the series though, with the star originally eying a more friendly figure in the show.
Holloway was already a big fan of the series before joining the cast and the actor was particularly excited to get the opportunity to play a cowboy.
Speaking to USA Today, the star revealed how he used to sit down with his wife and watch the show before getting the call to join it.
“When I got the call, I was so excited that I was finally going to get to be a cowboy,” Holloway explained, “because, in 18 years of acting, no one has cast me as the cowboy, for God’s sake.
“I was like, finally. Thank you, Taylor [Sheridan]… And nope. He cast me as a Wall Street guy. I was like, ‘Taylor? Really?’ He thought that was the funniest thing.”
Taylor Sheridan is the showrunner on the series and is currently wrapping up development on season four which is set for release this autumn.
There is no official release date for the fourth season, but the first trailer for season four teased: “Coming this Fall.”
According to Deadline, that date would most likely be November, placing it directly in the middle of the proposed release window.
Roarke will be returning and continuing to wreak havoc on the Dutton family, though the details of season four are still being kept under wraps.
The actor also revealed that the role was specifically created by Sheridan with Holloway in mind, though the star also teased it is “among other things” he may be doing in the show.
Currently those “other things” are unknown, but it still looks like the focus will be on Roarke in season four.
“I like to describe Roarke as the inevitable march of progress. You can’t stop him. He’s the slow steamroller, he’s just going to keep going,” Holloway describes his character.
There will be undoubtedly new gunfights, explosions, and drama to look forward to, and despite Roarke not featuring in the latest trailer, fans can rest assured he is behind much of it.
Yellowstone season 4 will be available to watch on the Paramount Network this autumn.
