A handful of new Ballpark restaurants, bars open for 2021 baseball season

Denver’s Ballpark neighborhood will look drastically different this baseball season, especially as fans come out to Coors Field for the first time in more than a year.

The new stadium-adjacent, $365 million development, McGregor Square, has filled a full block between 19th and 20th, Wynkoop and Wazee streets with attractions — a hotel, restaurants and bars — that are starting to open in time for the Rockies season-opener on Thursday.

Last week, The Rally Hotel started checking in guests, and this week The Original restaurant and Rally Bar start serving happy hour, dinner and drinks.

Later this spring, a family-style Italian restaurant, two-story sports bar and seven-vendor food hall will fill out the retail spaces around McGregor, where patio seating spills onto the main square and Rockies games will be broadcast over a giant TV screen.

But over the coming weeks, you’ll be able to watch live games (and listen over the restaurant’s speakers) with the patio doors open at The Original.

Opened Tuesday to indoor dining, The Original bills itself as a modern diner with all-day breakfast items, pork roll sandwiches, pies and shoestring fries, but also “croughnut” sliders, Bugles served with crab dip, boozy shakes and more menu “curiosities” to appeal to a social media-minded clientele.

Along those lines, the whole space is Instagram-ready, from the lilac booths and pegboard walls to the luncheonette counter and globe-lit bar. But it’s also very family-friendly, from the food to the table games (see pegboard Scrabble or tic-tac-toe). And get ready for dinner dates that are nine innings long. (Also, tip your servers accordingly.)

What else to watch for at McGregor Square

Starting later this spring, The Rally Hotel offerings will be joined by more restaurants and bars throughout McGregor Square. Here’s what’s planned.

  • Carmine’s on McGregor Square brings the 27-year family Italian tradition of Carmine’s on Penn to this new downtown location with a 3,500-square-foot restaurant and a patio on the main square.
  • Tom’s Watch Bar is a sports bar by restaurateur Tom Ryan. It will take up two floors of the square’s office tower and feature Topgolf Swing Suites that simulate the golfing experience on a large screen.
  • Milepost Zero is a food hall that will include seven stalls created by local Denver chefs. Expect a mix of popular fare from burgers to sushi and tacos to sandwiches.
  • A yet-to-be-announced fine dining restaurant should open by early 2022 and will also be two stories, with a dining room upstairs.
