The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) analysed satellite images to determine that China’s new aircraft carrier will be almost on par with the US’s military capabilities. The aircraft carrier was spotted in a Shanghai shipyard, and is known simply as the Type 003.

In a report published on Tuesday, the CSIS said: “Based on available information and observed progress at Jiangnan, the authors estimate that the Type 003 will launch in roughly three to six months.”

The CSIS said that most of what looked like the major internal and external work had been completed, or was very close to being finished.

The analysts added that items such as radar and certain weapons systems were still to be attached.

The technology built into the aircraft carrier recalls that of the US models, including a catapult system which improved the aircraft launching mechanisms.

This is more advanced outfitting than China’s two other aircraft carriers.

This is the second aircraft carrier that has been produced within China’s borders.

Matthew Funaiole, from the CSIS’s China Project, called this China’s “first foray into a modern aircraft carrier.”

He said: he said. “They’ve really committed to building out a carrier program, and they continue to push the boundaries of what they’re able to do.”

He added: “This is a pretty significant step forward.”

This advancement come in the midst of escalating tensions between the US and China, not least over Chinese incursions in Taiwan.

Mr Funaiole commented: “[China] wants to signal to the world that it has a world-class navy.”

This would help China “try to convince nations around the region or around the world that it is on par with the United States.”

Mr Funaiole warned, however, the new aircraft carrier did not go toe-to-toe with the American equivalents in every way.

The American models have larger airways, increased elevators to allow aircraft to take off quicker, and more catapults.

There is also a question of how the comparative aircraft carriers are powered.

The Type 003, as far as the CSIS can determine, is powered by conventional steam propulsion.

Nuclear technology powers the US aircraft carriers as standard.

Mr Funaiole cautioned direct comparisons in this regard as the mode of powering the aircraft carriers “may be less of a factor for China right now as many of its interests are in the near seas.”

This comes as Taiwan’s defence ministry said that Chinese military forces had engaged in “gray zone” warfare, with 554 “intrusions” into Taiwanese air defence zones between September 2020 and August 2021.

The defence ministry reiterated its commitment to “asymmetric warfare” against China’s efforts to “seize Taiwan swiftly whilst denying foreign interventions.”

In October, US President Joe Biden said that America would come to Taiwan’s defence if the country was attacked by the People’s Republic of China.
