I-70 shut down in both directions at Eisenhower Tunnel by crashes

Interstate 70 is closed at the Eisenhower Tunnel in both directions as a safety precaution after multiple traffic crashes.

Crashes on the west and east sides of the tunnel have been reported, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

The Colorado State Patrol, at about 5:30 p.m., urged drivers to avoid the I-70 mountain corridor approaching the tunnel in both directions. Loveland Pass is also closed because of traffic collisions.

It’s the second afternoon in a row that the eastbound lanes of the highway have been shutdown at the tunnel for safety reasons after crashes.

CDOT traffic cameras show snow covered roads with long lines of traffic along the stretch between Silverthorne and Georgetown.

Further west on I-70, eastbound lanes of the highway were shut down on Thursday afternoon near Dotsero for safety considerations.

Snow accumulations in the mountains on Thursday called for up to three inches in some areas, according to the National Weather Service.
