Emergency services have been dispatched after a “large bang” sounding like an “explosion” lit up the sky in Liverpool.

Merseyside Police are aware of “numerous reports” after residents said they saw the sky “light up”.

Residents in Huyton, Prescot and Whiston all heard the noise, the Liverpool Echo reports.

Other residents said they could feel their “houses shake”.

Merseyside Police say initial indications suggest the bang was caused by "a fire in the woods", and said gas canisters or aerosol cans may have been thrown on to it.

Police patrols are currently trying to identify the source.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue have also sent appliances to Tarbock Road, close to a wooded area.

One person tweeted: "Heard a big explosion in Huyton about 20 mins ago, the walls shook and everything. Not sure what has happened, hope people are ok."

Another said: "Just heard a massive bang outside and a big red flash! whats going on? it was terrifying #Huyton. #BigBang."

A third added: "Massive bang over #Huyton 5 mins ago, thought a something had exploded! All the neighbours outside checking on each other – no idea what it was!!!"
