Royal fans have been left divided over Meghan Markle's trip to the site of the Texas school shooting after some accused her of using the tragedy as a 'photo opportunity'.
The Duchess of Sussex made a surprise appearance at a makeshift memorial to victims of a horrifying school shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde where 21 people, including 19 primary school children, were gunned down on Tuesday (May 24).
Salvador Ramos, 18, was shot dead in Uvalde, Texas, US during his horrifying rampage.
Mum-of-two Meghan was seen placing a bouquet of white roses at the gates outside Uvalde County Courthouse on Thursday (May 26) took a private moment to pay her respects. She was wearing a grey t-shirt, jeans and a black baseball cap.
But some fans on social media have questioned her motives for having a photograph taken at the site so soon after the tragedy.
One user asked why a simple public statement would not have been sufficient, and wrote: "Not Meghan Markle using the recent tragedy as a photo opportunity and PR. I could not think of one good reason why she would stage a photoshoot at a memorial instead of just releasing a statement— did she have to insert herself?"
US political strategist Arthur Schwartz was more scathing and mocked Meghan's thought process behind the decision, writing: "Hello, grieving people of Uvalde. Thank you for this opportunity to make this about me.”
A user replied: "She literally has no connections to Texas whatsoever."
But others leapt to her defence and said it was fine for her to make the gesture, with one writing: "Maybe she just wanted to lay flowers. Not everything has to be political."
Meghan and Prince Harry are expected to return to the UK next week to take part in celebrations for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.
