Pals mistook a woman for her husband’s mistress after she went on a dramatic diet.
Sarah Buchanan lost 10 stone in just 15 months – meaning even friends didn’t recognise her when she was out and about.
The health care assistant, 33, said: “We were waiting for my dad to pick us up. My friend spotted us and thought Dan had another woman by his side.
“Then she realised it was still me. It was quite funny and flattering really.
“My husband has got a new woman – quite literally, it seems.”
At her biggest, she tipped the scales at 24st 11lb and struggled to squeeze into size 26 clothes.
The mum of four was given “a kick up the arse” when she was told she had diabetes and may need to have gastric bypass surgery.
Sarah said: “Finding out the diagnosis frightened me, so I knew I had to do something.
“I finally feel like the real me. I feel happy.”
Her husband Daniel said: “I feel like I have got a new wife.
“She looks so different that people have thought she was another woman. It’s quite funny. I am so proud of her.”
Sarah got her diabetes diagnosis when she went to see her GP for a health check in August 2019.
She said: “It was shocking, but it was scary when they told me I might need surgery.
“It was worrying and I felt like I could have a heart attack at any minute and not be there for my children.”
On getting the warning, Sarah knew it was time to make massive changes in her life.
She had always been overweight and was bullied as a child.
Sarah said: “I was called a ‘fat pig’ and ‘fat cow’, it was horrible.
“But now I feel amazing.”
Sarah made huge changes to her diet – ditching treats and large chocolate bars and ending her
habit of munching on the children’s leftovers.
She swapped sandwiches and snacking on bread for more balanced alternatives and started doing daily exercise at home in St Austell, Cornwall.
Sarah’s diabetes has now been reversed and she feels “happy and healthy”.
But she said the best thing has been seeing her kids’ reaction.
Sarah added: “My son keeps giving me a hug and saying, ‘I can get my arms around you now mummy’. I’m glowing now.”
