A cat has been found abandoned at the top of a pole 500 metres from shore, sparking outrage among animal lovers.
Photos of the black and white kitty shocked social media users, with the animal looking terrified as it clung to the wooden pole that was surrounded by deep water off the coast of Pila in Italy.
The terrified animal was photographed with it’s claws digging in to the post – with water up to two metres deep surrounding it.
Locals surmised that the animal had been left there after someone found it on their boat and decided to throw it on the pillar instead of returning it to shore.
Taking to Facebook, a local from nearby Porto Tolle – both waterside towns not far from Venice – shared photos of the upsetting scenes.
The woman, named Gabriella Gibin, wrote: “After talking to witnesses, I decided to write about an unfortunate incident in Pila.
“The pole you see in the picture is about 4 meters tall and lies in the center of a canal that is used in the port of Pila to guide boats and fishing boats to sea.”

She explained that the distance to shore is “500 meters or so” while the water depth is “two metres or so”.
Sharing the images of the cat sitting on top of the water surrounded post, she continued: “There are two possibilities.
“The cat decided to swim [to the post], or someone noticed they had a cat inside their boat and instead of keeping it safely until the end of the job, they took it in the water!”
The outraged local continued: “Indifference and cruelty to these poor animals have no end!”
Fortunately, there was a happy end to the story as a local boy rescued the cat from it’s watery prison.
Gabriella wrote: “To the boy who saved the poo kitty goes all our gratitude.
“The recovery wasn’t simple as the kitty was terrified. Eventually the cat was taken to the mainland and to safety.”
She added of the person who left the cat on the post: “Just one word… SHAME!!!”
