What is the Nation of Islam?

The Nation of Islam has earned a "prominent position in the ranks of organized hate," according to the Southern Poverty Law Center.

It was founded in 1930 and "has grown into one of the wealthiest and best-known organizations in black America," the SPLC says on its website.

The SLPC adds that "its bizarre theology of innate black superiority over whites" is a belief system that is wholly rejected by mainstream Muslims.

At one point Martin Luther King warned of “a hate group arising in our midst that would preach the doctrine of black supremacy.”

Malcolm X was a prominent member of the organization from 1952 until 1964.

He was assassinated in 1965, and Farrakhan "weathered the storm" and "managed to create a powerful base within the Nation," according to the SPLC.

Who founded the Nation of Islam?

Wallace D. Fard, also known as Wallace Fard Muhammad or Master Fard Muhammad, was the founder of the Nation of Islam.

He would be succeeded by Elijah Muhammad, who led the NOI from 1934 until his death in 1975.

It was a "tightly organized" group from the start, "envisioned by Fard as a paramilitary wing to defend NOI against police attacks," the SLPC says.

"In the 1940s, 'messenger' Elijah Muhammad also began constructing what would later be considered the Nation’s 'empire,' purchasing the group’s first bit of Michigan farmland in 1945 and founding businesses and educational ventures in several states that a decade later were valued in the millions."

Was Noah Green a follower of the Nation of Islam?

Noah Green, who was fatally shot by officers during the attack at the US Capitol, was believed to be a follower of the Nation of Islam.

He spoke of going through a difficult time where he leaned on his faith, according to recent messages posted online that have been taken down.

The messages were captured by the group SITE, which tracks online activity.

“To be honest these past few years have been tough, and these past few months have been tougher,” he wrote.

“I have been tried with some of the biggest, unimaginable tests in my life. I am currently now unemployed after I left my job partly due to afflictions, but ultimately, in search of a spiritual journey.”

Evans died after the suspect rammed a car into two officers at a barricade outside the US. Capitol and then emerged with a knife.

It was the second line-of-duty death this year for a department still struggling to heal from the January 6 insurrection at the Capitol.

Who is Louis Farrakhan?

Louis Farrakhan, who is now 87, has led the Nation of Islam since 1977.

The SLPC calls Farrakhan "an anti-Semite who routinely accuses Jews of manipulating the US government and controlling the levers of world power."

Farrakhan was born Louis Eugene Walcott on May 11, 1933, in New York City.

He was a talented high school student, according to the SPLC, but he dropped out of college to take care of his wife, who was going through a difficult pregnancy.

In his early days Farrakhan had a music career and recorded calypso albums under the name The Charmer, the SLPC said.
