Serial killers are known to be master manipulators – so it comes as no surprise that some of them managed to hide their dastardly deeds from their partners.

While these men were skulking around at night looking for their next victim, their wives were none the wiser.

Read on to find out more about these serial killers and their gruesome crimes and the women in their lives who had no idea.

Dennis Rader hid evidence from Paula Dietz under floorboards

Dennis Rader is a serial killer who haunted the community in Wichita, Kansas for more than 30 years.

He was known as the BKT killer due to this preferred method of “bind, torture and kill”, murdering at least women from 1974 to 1991.

Dennis was apprehended in 2005 after he accidentally incriminated himself while sending taunting letters to the police.

The killer later admitted to investigators that the “Motherlode of evidence” was hidden under the floorboards of the family home.

Paula had been married to Dennis for 34 years when she found out about his secret other life and moved away from Kansas.

She was granted an emergency divorce following his arrest. While she’s never made a statement, her daughter Kerri Rawson came forward in 2014 and said the family never knew her father was behind the murders.

Linda Yates thought Robert Yates was cheating

Linda Yates was in complete and utter shock when her husband of 26 years was arrested for murdering between 13 and 18 people.

The couple had had five children together, all the while he was killing primarily sex works or young women who had issues with drugs.

Linda had been growing suspicious of her husband during this time – but that’s because she thought he was cheating.

This is because she found out that Robert often stayed at a pay-by-the-hour motel, they were regularly low on money and he would leave adult material around the home.

Robert was eventually arrested in 2000 and Linda visited him in jail soon after to try and get answers, which he denied her.

In a later interview with Dateline, the host asked Linda how she could not see the signs. She responded, "But, see, you’re so close to somebody you don’t see it."

Peter Sutcliffe broke the news to Sonia Szurma over the phone

Peter “The Yorkshire Ripper” murdered 13 female victims and seriously injured nine others between the years 1975 and 1980 in Yorkshire, England.

In 1974 he married Sonia Szurma and, after being told they would never be able to have children, his murders began.

Peter is known for targeting sex workers, who he would beat around the head with a hammer before bludgeoning them to death.

Other victims were attacked with a screwdriver and some were strangled to death with a rope.

Peter was finally arrested in 1981 and confessed to being “The Yorkshire Ripper” two days later.

He broke the news to Sonia over the phone, who had no idea he was the notorious killer.

Judith Mawson refused to believe Gary Ridgway was a killer

In 2001 Gary Ridgway was arrested and charged with the murder of dozens of women.

When the police initially told Judith Mawson that her husband was the notorious Green River killer, she refused to believe it.

She was even ready to stand up for him in court but she never got the chance, as he pleaded guilty to 48 murders as part of a plea deal to save him from execution.

Police believe he killed more than 70 sex workers or runaways in the Seattle and Tacoma, Washington areas during the 1980s and 1990s.

Judith admitted that while there were some clues of his crime spree, she dismissed them at the time.

Eventually, she learned the true extent of his crimes and changed her name back to Mawson.

She never forgave Gary for what he did and released a book called Green River Serial Killer: Biography of an Unsuspecting Wife, which went on to become a bestseller.

Fayina Chikatilo was in denial over cannibal Andrei Chikatilo

Russian cannibal Andrei “Butcher of Rostov” Chikatilo is often regarded as one of the worst serial killers the world has ever seen.

It is believed that Andrei killed, raped, murdered and ate as many as 100 people, including many young children yet his wife seemingly had no idea.

He was arrested and charged in 1990 for the murders of 53 people, which came as a shock to wife Fayina.

Having been married for 30 years, she said she never suspected him of murder, even when he would come home with blood on his clothes.

She allegedly still had no suspicions when Andrei had to leave his teaching job after he molested one of his students.

Fayina told police she believed her husband may have been capable of an affair but nothing more so was shocked at the evidence they presented her with.

He was eventually executed in 1994.
